Program Information

Players registered with St. Charles Hockey Club are grouped by age into categories determined by the guidelines of Hockey Edmonton. For the Under 7 category, these are suggested birth years but consider the skill level of your child when selecting the program.

  • Under 7 (2017)
Discovery is a program for beginning skaters who are learning to move and skate while wearing hockey equipment. For 4-year-olds.
  • Under 7 (2016)
Jr. Timbits is an introduction to hockey where the children will have only practices. For 5-year-olds.
  • Under 7 (2015)
Sr. Timbits is an introduction to hockey where the children will have practices as well as play games. For 6-year-olds.
  • Under 9
Novice hockey involves the formation of tiered teams that play city-wide. The players will vary from beginners that are learning basic hockey skills to those that have more experience. For 7 and 8-year-olds.
  • Under 11
Atom hockey continues with the formation of tiered teams that play city-wide. The players will still vary from beginners that are learning basic hockey skills to those that have more experience. For 9 and 10-year-olds.
  • Under 13
Peewee hockey continues with the formation of tiered teams that play city-wide. The players will still vary from beginners that are learning basic hockey skills to those that have more experience. For 11 and 12-year-olds.

Each team from Under 9 to Under 13, Hockey Edmonton provides 20 games and 20 practices. The regular season consists of three rounds of games with re-tiering usually (but not always) occurring after each round. Regular season is followed by a playoff round. In addition, each team (Under 9 to Under 13) plays a minimum of 2 games during Minor Hockey Week held in January. Teams may also seek additional exhibition or tournament games, at an extra cost to parents.

Evaluations

Players may vary considerably in their individual skills. In order to provide a more enjoyable experience, an evaluation process is necessary to ensure kids are playing with other players of similar abilities.

Under 9, Under 11, and Under 13 players participate in evaluations based on the player's age category and direct observation of hockey skills with a strong emphasis on skating. The purpose of evaluations is to create teams consisting of players with similar abilities.

  •  Team Formation
    • When evaluations have been completed, players will be placed on teams based on evaluation results. Each team will typically consist of 12 - 17 players.
    • Results of evaluations are posted on our website, after which the head coach of your child's team will contact you.

Team-Level Fundraising; Under 9 to Under 13

Individual teams may want to:

  • obtain additional practice ice,
  • play exhibition games,
  • enter tournaments,
  • buy team apparel,
  • have team-building events.

These activities are extras and are funded by the individual teams. The source of the necessary money, to the limits that the parental majority may set, is the parent group of that team and can be generated via a cash call, fundraising, or most commonly, some combination of both.
